The forest floor has very little vegetation but there are thousands of plants and animals that inhabit it; the main reason it is void of vegetation is the canopy prevents sunlight and moisture from reaching it. However, the forest floor is the place where decomposition takes place, which is vital to its continued existence. The floor also provides support for the canopy trees.
